Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)
At HTL, we are committed to the environment and the resources we use and supply. Our processes for LVL 11 and LVL 13 are certified according to internationally recognised environmental standards – including the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Chain of Custody (FSC-C205825)
Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) – is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation that promotes the responsible management of the world’s forests, and provides internationally recognised forest certification.
FSC® Chain of Custody Certification
Chain of Custody Code – SGSHK-COC-510035
At HTL, we are committed to sustainable practices across all aspects of our operations, ensuring that we balance environmental, social, and economic responsibilities. As a remanufacturer and distributor of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), H-Clad, and LOSP Timber Treatment, we recognise the importance of sustainable sourcing, responsible production, and environmental stewardship.
Commitment to Sustainable Sourcing
HTL is dedicated to sourcing timber from sustainably managed forests. Our Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) products are manufactured by NelsonPine LVL, which is made from locally grown renewable plantation Radiata Pine. NelsonPine LVL is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), ensuring that our raw materials are responsibly sourced to protect biodiversity and support forest ecosystems.
HTL's H-CLAD range features products crafted from a selection of sustainably sourced NZ-grown timbers, including Macrocarpa, Radiata Pine, Larch, and Lawson Cypress. These species are naturally durable, eliminating the need for chemical treatments while offering a warm, aesthetically pleasing appearance. By utilising locally sourced timbers, we reduce transportation emissions and support sustainable forest management practices within New Zealand. Sourced from responsibly managed forests, these timbers provide sustainable, high-performance solutions for various applications, reinforcing HTL's commitment to environmental responsibility.
Sustainability of H3.1 LOSP Treatment
HTL employs H3.1 Light Organic Solvent Preservative (LOSP) treatments to enhance the durability of timber products used in above-ground, exterior applications, as specified in NZS 3602:2003. This advanced treatment process impregnates the timber with preservatives dissolved in a light organic solvent, providing effective protection against decay, fungi, and insect attack without causing significant swelling or distortion of the wood. LOSP treatment is particularly advantageous as it preserves the timber's dimensional stability and appearance, making it ideal for high-quality joinery and cladding applications. H3.1 LOSP-treated timber has a minimum expected service life of 15 years for weatherboard applications in New Zealand.
By integrating H3.1 LOSP-treated timbers into our product range, HTL ensures that our materials are durable and fit for purpose, aligning with sustainable building practices. This commitment reflects our dedication to delivering high-quality, environmentally responsible timber solutions that meet the evolving needs of our clients and the construction industry.
Environmental Responsibility
HTL demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental responsibility through a multifaceted approach focusing on waste minimization, efficient resource utilization, and pollution control. Our collaboration with Nelson Pine Industries Ltd, which holds the prestigious Telarc-accredited ISO 14001 Environmental Management Certification, reinforces our dedication to eco-friendly manufacturing processes and environmental conservation. At our facilities, HTL implements comprehensive recycling initiatives for various materials and packaging, including cardboard. Our timber wrap is classified as LDPE-4 for recycling purposes.
Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction
We strive to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions across all operations. HTL continuously monitors our processes to identify opportunities for improvement. In addition to energy efficiency, our use of mass timber Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) plays a significant role in carbon sequestration. Timber naturally absorbs and stores carbon dioxide (CO₂) during tree growth, effectively removing it from the atmosphere. This stored carbon remains sequestered within the timber products throughout their lifespan.
Compliance and Continuous Improvement
HTL complies with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, striving for continuous improvement in our sustainability efforts. We regularly review and update our practices to align with the latest industry standards and best practices, ensuring that we lead by example in the timber industry. To maintain our high standards, HTL operates multiple audit and compliance programs across various aspects of our operations.
HTL maintains rigorous quality control measures across our operations. Our relamination and remanufacturing processes are subject to stringent quality checks with Graderight, ensuring the highest product integrity. For timber treatment, we participate in an independent quality assurance program with the New Zealand Timber Preservation Council (NZTPC), adhering to the NZS 3602:2003 standard. Our export procedures comply with strict guidelines, incorporating comprehensive risk assessments and security screening in partnership with AsureQuality, demonstrating our commitment to excellence and regulatory compliance in every aspect of our business.
Social Responsibility
At HTL, we prioritise social responsibility by fostering a positive work culture that values the well-being of our employees and the communities we serve. We uphold fair labour practices, maintain safe working conditions, and respect cultural values, ensuring a supportive environment for all team members. Our commitment to employee well-being is further enhanced by providing access to Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services, which support mental health and personal challenges. We believe that family comes first, and our workplace culture reflects this by promoting a healthy balance between work and personal life.
Commitment and Review
HTL is committed to continuously improving our sustainability practices, ensuring that our operations align with environmental, social, and economic responsibilities. We will review and update this policy regularly to reflect advancements in sustainable forestry, manufacturing, and industry best practices.
This policy is endorsed by HTL’s leadership and applies to all aspects of our business operations.
